5 Critical Signs Your Laser Cutting Head Needs Repair & Calibration
Published by TriQuench India Engineering Team | Updated August 2026
The laser cutting head (Precitec, Raytools, WSX, Bodor) is the most mechanically precise assembly on a fiber laser CNC system. Catching early warning signs prevents costly optical contamination and catastrophic head collisions.
1. Z-Axis Height Sensor Drift (Head Touching Sheet Metal)
If the cutting head height sensor fluctuates wildly or crashes into tilted sheet metal, the capacitive sensor ring or amplifier cable is degraded. Re-calibration or preamp replacement is required.
2. Focal Shift & Thermal Lensing
If cut quality deteriorates after 15 minutes of continuous cutting, thermal lensing is occurring due to dirt on internal focus optics.
3. Auto-Focus Stepper Motor Gear Binding
Hearing high-pitched grinding noises during focus changes indicates worn lead screws or auto-focus motor encoder faults.
